CEE Professor Mazurek Pens OpEd Addressing NYC Traffic Congestion

Cars in traffic

According to civil and environmental engineering professor Monica Mazurek, New Jersey commuters driving into Manhattan are only part of the problem when it comes to addressing traffic congestion and air polution in New York City and the metropolitan region.

In a November 2, 2021 op-ed in the New Jersey Star-Ledger, Mazurek addresses the approach policymakers have turned to since 2007 of raising tolls and restricting roadway access to help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in New York City, and yet both problems continue to impact the metropolitan region.

Her piece looks for better methods for managing these chronic conditions than congestion pricing and with the impacts of climate change, does the benefit of taking action outweigh the cost to commuters?
